Saving animals sends activist to prison in California

On May 2nd 2016, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California sentenced animal activist Joseph Buddenberg to two years in federal prison for Conspiracy to Violate the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (AETA).

Buddenberg and his fellow activist Nicole Kissane  made a 40,000 mile road trip to free thousands of minks from mink farms. In reality they are heroes who saved thousands of lives, but  law says they are terrorists. Such a shame, saving animals is considered illegal but torturing animals in the name of fashion and lab experiments is legal and is protected by law.
As per this law, saving animals from harm is terrorism, but animal cruelty in labs and fur farms are protected by law. Can you believe it?

If the same fur farm torture gets to be done to any human instead, then it’s outrageous and the one’s doing it, he or she will be tagged as a psychopath, then why is it any different for the one’s animal cruelty? Why are the saviours labeled as terrorists? Are we forgetting the fact that humans are also animals?

Many studies over the years have found out that humans are no better than animals, we don’t hold that special status that most of us think we do.
So on what ground  other animal lives are any less than human lives?

Humans are naturally compassionate. But most of change from the way we are and turn blind eyed to suffering, and in most cases greed is what changes people turning their hearts dark.  That’s  one reason why compassion got Joseph  labeled as a terrorist.Don’t you think it should be the other way round?

The one who tortures and murders animals are the ones’ who are terrorists, not the one who saves them.

Buddenberg and his co-defendant Nicole Kissane were indicted under the AETA last July. Earlier this year, both signed non-cooperating plea agreements; While Buddenberg gets two years,  Kissane’s sentence hearing is scheduled for June.

    Free Joseph and Nicole now . They are amazing people helping animals . Why are you allowing mink farms. This is cruel and disgusting . Free them both and shut all mink farms down NOW

    Good for Joseph standing up for what is right. There are a lot of changes needed to make our World more peaceful for man and animals, and lets hope they happen sooner rather than later. So many years of suffering. It’s time fur farms were left to the dark ages.At least people are becoming more aware of the cruelty involved through people like Joseph. I’m sorry that you are having to go to prison for doing good Joseph.

  7. I completely believe this is going on. Our nation is run by corporate interests with vast amounts of wealth, a long reach, and far too much influence on our supposed “representatives” in government. The Oligarchs get the laws they want passed because their wallets are deeper. I encourage anyone who cares for animals to realize things won’t change unless we change who is in power.

    The Second American Revolution is happening right now. We are being Taxed Without Representation while MegaCorporate America enjoys paying no taxes and having it all their way. Bernie Sanders is at the head of our revolution, and of the other two choices, has an outstanding record on animal rights, people rights, and environmental rights. Check it out and let’s take back our representative democratic republic so that we may secure the blessings of liberty on the next 7 generations.

    Senator Sanders earned an HSLF rating of 100. Senator Sanders’ score is the most recent, and was determined by the fact that he cast votes on all eight animal rights issues that passed through the Senate in 2014. Of those eight Acts, he voted in favor of seven of them. He also received “extra credit” for being a leader in writing and co-sponsoring animal rights legislation.

    In 2007, Senator Sanders co-sponsored all of the following bills:
    Big Cats and Public Safety Protection Act which aimed to prevent the breeding and possession of big cats, while still permitting accredited zoos and wildlife sanctuaries to operate in the important conservation and welfare role that they currently play in the United States.

    Puppy Uniform Protection and Safety Act which attempted to make sure that breeders and pet store owners provide dogs with living spaces that are clean, spacious, and are free of infestation by pests or vermin, as well as require that the health of these dogs be monitored by a veterinarian. The PUPS Act also aimed to close loopholes that allow domestic puppy mills to continue operating in the United States.

    Safeguard American Food Exports Act which aimed to permanently prohibit the slaughter of horses for human consumption in the United States, along with the transportation of horses for slaughter overseas. Unfortunately this bill did not pass through Congress.

    Captive Primate Safety Act which would make it unlawful for a person to import, export, transport, sell, receive, acquire, or purchase a live animal of any prohibited wildlife species in interstate or foreign commerce. Primates are often abused and neglected as pets, taken from their mothers shortly after birth, chained in a backyard or confined in a basement cage and deprived of social interaction with other primates. They can become very aggressive and dangerous and can transmit diseases that pose serious public health and safety risks. This bill was approved in July of 2014.

    Egg Products Inspection Act which aimed to phase out the use of battery cages for egg laying hens in favor of enriched housing that allows chickens room to move, and includes perches, nesting boxes, and places to scratch. It would prohibit forcing new laying cycles by withholding food or water and making sure the ammonia levels from manure are kept low. Unfortunately this bill only had 18 cosponsors and did not pass.

    Animal Fighting Spectator Prohibition Act which aimed to amend the Animal Welfare Act to impose criminal penalties for attending or encouraging anyone less than 18 years of age to attend an animal fighting venture. This bill was signed into law in February of 2014.

    Prevent All Soring Tactics Act which aimed to eliminate the cruel practice of “soring,” in which horse trainers intentionally inflict pain on the hooves and legs of show horses to exaggerate their high-stepping gait. An amended version of the bill passed so that owners and caretakers who are found guilty of participating in soring may be disqualified from participating in any aspect of equestrian competitions for up to a year and can be fined up to $3,000.

    In addition to co-sponsoring the above bills, Senator Sanders voted YES on the Agricultural Act of 2014, which preserved hundreds of state and local laws protecting food safety, animal welfare and agriculture. The Act ended up passing and becoming law. Senator Sanders earned “extra credit” from the HSLF for, “leading as a prime sponsor of pro-animal legislation”

    Hj Thankyou for this article and information on these great activists who yes are being treated like criminals when they are heroes this is outrages not even animal abusers get treated as criminals they get if anything a slap on the wrist! Tania

    I agree totally re the ‘legal’ cruelty that is perpetrated on animals. Individuals who torture domestic animals et get a slap on the hand! It is unbelievable.
